I’m going to go ahead and say something that a lot of coaches and players in today’s game for some reason just don’t want to hear.
Bunting is an extremely important skill in the game of baseball. Extremely. Especially at the higher levels (high school and up)

Dont get me wrong, I completely understand the logic behind encouraging kids that are still developing and growing as players to get up to the box and do damage.
But listen man...if your team can’t successfully execute in bunt situations, you’re not going to win when it matters

My first year of coaching was with a 14u group. Probably bunted once all season.
Why? Because the games. Don’t. Matter. I couldn’t care less about a 14u tournament trophy. In that case, yes, I encouraged every single kid in the lineup to get up there and crush baseballs

The last two years I’ve spent coaching with a college coach who has spent a lot of time in this game. Want to know what he’s constantly the most frustrated about?
Players’ inability to lay down bunts and, on the other side, defend them.
Players’ inability to lay down bunts and, on the other side, defend them.
Why? Because coaches seem to think that because a bunt happens in such a small percentage of plays, they should only practice executing/defending to that percentage.
Yet fail to acknowledge that generally when laying down/defending a bunt, it’s in a big situation. Like, big.

Coaches...please. PLEASE do not let some stupid app on your phone dictate how you are going to run your program/build an offensive philosophy.
Twitter has created an environment of hardos looking for attention by bashing “small ball” aspects of the game like bunting

I can tell you right now that when you’re down a run late in a game with your 160lb 9 hole hitter up...you should probably swallow your pride and call the damn bunt
What I continuously see is this situation where homie can’t get the ball out of the infield & is up daddy hacking

Again, this is all referring to the high school level and up.
When the games don’t matter, have fun! Encourage them to blast balls in the gap. But man, be realistic with them. Be honest with them.
And I promise man...no ones making fun of a coach for calling a bunt
