Might do an occasional thread about Art Deco buildings I see in London... there’s quite a lot but they seem to get overlooked compared to other styles. Maybe because British Art Deco is often quite understated compared to other examples? Here’s Crownleigh Court in Brixton
London Fire Brigade Headquarters on Albert Embankment has a lovely Art Deco facade, in need of a bit of TLC – bei Old London Fire Brigade Headquarters
Chaplin House in Brixton, round the back of Electric Avenue. Is this Art Deco? Probably
Part of an Art Deco brick church in Camberwell, I’m afraid I didn’t get the name
Colliers Wood Tube station - as you get further out into suburbia I’ve always thought of tube stations as little outposts of London state
Sorry for the terrible photo but I cycled past the old Merton Park Telephone exchange building the other day and thought it was pretty cool
Christchurch House in Streatham Hill, a nifty apartment block with some cool details
Two big setpieces from Streatham Hill, probably ex-cinemas.... really notable that these sorts of buildings are *not* in demand, these two are currently a flooring shop and a ‘Cashino’ – bei Streatham Hill Railway Station (SRH)
Here’s a great one in Streatham where the current tenants have done it justice - look at those elephants at the top
Here’s Tooting Bec tube station - note the London Transport roundel detailing on the columns – bei Tooting Bec London Underground Station
Here’s Tooting Police Station... like an open book – bei Tooting Police Station
A municipal building in Tooting, the wings on the side have ‘Telephone exchange’ and ‘Employment exchange’ engraved above the doors
Dumbarton Court on Brixton Hill - great building, didn’t look like it was in a great state of repair – bei Dumbarton Court
Quite a weird one in Tooting with a number of different units at the front, not sure if that’s the original setup or if it’s even Art Deco, or whether my eyes were playing tricks on me
Nothing special from Streatham but I know you lot like rounded corners. One of my hobbies is looking above the plastic chain hoardings on UK high streets and realising that the buildings are actually great but nobody ever sees them due to the road layout and shop signage
Bingo hall in Tooting that was definitely a theatre or cinema. Look at the faces on the top of the columns
Moira Court on Balham High Road has a great entrance feature – bei Moira Court
Du Cane Court in Balham... this place is absolutely huge – bei Du Cane Court
One cool thing about so many Art Deco buildings being telephone exchanges and cinemas is the reminder that these two things were both being built en masse in Britain for the first time in a relatively short period and both would have felt magically hi-tech at the time
An era-appropriate London bus was driving past the Daily Express building on Fleet Street just as I photographed it – bei Fleet Street
The Daily Tekegraph building on Fleet Street is quite something - note Peterborough Court; until 2003 the paper’s diary column was called Peterborough
56 Fleet Street, I like the orange. Lots of more classic Art Deco on here
Bush House, the writing says ‘to the friendship of the English speaking peoples’. It was built as an international trade centre and was previously the BBC World Service headquarters
This building has always felt Art Deco to me when I’ve walked past and admired it but now I look again maybe it isn’t. It’s on Judd Street in King’s Cross
Beautiful Art Deco pub in Seven Dials – bei Two Brewers
Amazing Odeon on Shaftesbury Avenue with a massive relief frieze – bei Odeon
55 Broadway, London Underground’s HQ, incorporating St James’s Park station.... more Potemkin sky bridges please
This on Peckham Rye has really let itself go but is generally fantastic – bei Peckham Rye Railway Station (PMR)
Nearly missed this one in Balham that is now a not particularly majestic wine shop. The tiling has aged poorly I think because plastic facsimiles of the style were common in the noughties so it feels cheaper than it is?
Cool Art Deco flats on Pancras Road in Camden
“Churchill” on Lambeth Road has a very art deco entrance and cool streamline balconies – bei Imperial War Museum
Intersting one here in Stockwell - very basic modern building but with quite an ornate Art Deco portico
Another subtly Art Deco telephone exchange, this time in Victoria
Adelaide House on London Bridge... I’m a big fan of an Art Deco statue
Nice buttress on this estate near London Bridge, didn’t catch the name I’m afraid (that’s the Shard behind it)
A bit of unexpected Art Deco spotted at Paddington station
Brixton H&M... look above the plastic boarding on a lot of chain shops in UK towns and you’ll find similar, Art Deco or otherwise – bei Brixton London Underground Station
Slightly more subtle but still detectably Art Deco in the building next door – bei Brixton London Underground Station
This nice thing on the corner in Stockwell, currently no tenant
I like this residential block on the corner of Streatham Common - cool streamlined balconies – bei Streatham Common
This in Streatham is in terrible shape but look at the remains of that Art Deco clock – bei Tesco Extra
Interesting Art Deco around the back of the guildhall in the City
And this in Leyton
This Iceland in Leyton is also a surprise if you look up
Cool Art Deco window thing going on at Poynders Court in Clapham
And on the Oaklands Estate in Clapham, very cool long sweeping streamlined balconies
Hightrees House on the corner of Clapham Common
Quite understated in Thornton, set in lovely parkland like good modernism should be
Marsham Court near the Home Office in Westminster - there are lots of dourly Art Deco apartment buildings down the backstreets of Westminster – bei Westminster Gardens
Took these this morning... I honestly hadn’t noticed that Victoria coach station looked quite nice from the outside before – bei Victoria Coach Station
A subtle bit of streamlining on Clapham High Street
Broadhurst Gardens in South Hampstead, looking very film noir this evening
extra film-noir edition of this building as suggested by @ejhchess
No idea what this is but it’s visible from the Grand Union canal towpath at Greenford – bei Greenford Quay
Uxbridge tube station, very Art Deco indeed
Art Deco-ish interior at St John’s Wood tube station – bei St. John's Wood London Underground Station
Lawn Road flats in Hampstead... former home of architect Walter Gropius – bei Isokon Building
This building has an incredible history: it was owned by the New Statesman for a few years, was the home of several Soviet spies and thus long under surveillance by British intelligence, and the flats were originally served by a communal kitchen connected to them by a dumb waiter
Absolute Art Deco palace on Kilburn High Road, now a church, and possibly still nominally a theatre? – bei Ruach Ministries Kilburn
These smart flats are on an island in the middle of the one-way system at Swiss Cottage – bei Regency Lodge
And these are around the corner next to Finchley Road tube
Let the artdecoposting resume: the old Craven ‘A’ factory just south of Mornington Crescent
The national audit office building! look at those wingéd figures over the entrance auditing the world! (It’s actually a former check-in terminal and HQ for Imperial Airways) – bei National Audit Office
The Apollo Victoria, built as an Art Deco cinema and now used as a stage theatre for the musical Wicked. Including this lovely relief detail hinting at its former purpose – bei Apollo Victoria Theatre
