#afcb: A thread…
I was lucky enough to cover some of #afcb’s finest moments, but also some of their worst failings… 👇🏼
2002: The side that was relegated at Wrexham was full of fine players (IMHO) and the promotion season that followed proved that.

2002 was the story of a failing squad, no more, no less… 👇🏼
2008: The last day at Carlisle was so nearly a miracle and what cost the squad that season (other than losing 10 points) was a lack of experience.

The core players that remained (Bartley, Pearce, Pitman etc) came of age two years later… 👇🏼
2009: This was a season where Howe’s signings were the difference between successful failure and pure oblivion.

Despite criticism over transfers in recent years, he knows a good player and, equally importantly, he knows a great character – Robinson, Feeney, Molesley, etc… 👇🏼
2020: This season, given the money spent over the past two years, has been a massive failure.

Even if they stay up this afternoon, that’s still the case and major changes are needed over the summer whatever happens… 👇🏼
It feels like the end of an era – and it should be exactly that.

For too long, #afcb have reflected too much and not looked forward enough.

The Championship should be the club’s level now moving forward - minimum… 👇🏼
Stop talking about Great Escapes and Greatest Escapes and talk about aims and ambitions going forward.

That’s not to say remove the club’s recent history, because a football club without a history is soulless and without meaning… 👇🏼
But 2020-21, whether in the Premier League or the Championship, needs to be the start of a new era and the beginning of what should become a new period of history.

No more looking back. No more successful failures.

Good luck to everyone today 🍒 xx
