Going to compile a thread of apologies (responses) that Indian Manels in IR have provided when they have been called out. (1/n)
1. “We look for merit”

Meaning: Women are not meritorious. It overlooks the fact that structural factors in the system limit women from accessing the same resources that men have.
4. “We have hosted wanels before”

Yes, I’m sure on March 8, you presented all your women employees with a rose. Just because you’ve hosted one panel on gender issues & featured women in it doesn't mean you're off the hook.
3. “We forgot. But we welcome them as audience”

That’s not an apology. Women are not going to listen, applaud quietly or serve chai for this nonsense peddled as knowledge.
5. “These feminists will yell about anything. Nothing wrong with manels.”
Yes, feminists raise awareness about a myriad of issues. It would be nice to get equal pay, better representation and acknowledgment for all the work women put in. That's still not a reason for a manel tho
6. “Topics about national security involve armed forces so obviously the panel will be male”

We can talk about the glass ceiling and inequalities in the armed forces that prevent women from rising up to authoritative positions but if you’re giving this response, you don’t care.
7. “We contacted some women. They were too busy.”

Yes, unlike your manelists, these women have to do twice or thrice the amount of work to keep what they've done so far. Unpaid Labour is real.

Work around their schedules. Offer better incentives.
Indian women in IR are here to stay. We fight many prejudices every single to day to work in this field. If you don’t like being called out, change your practices.
Invite women, cite their work, pay them better.

@InManels @raji143 @ChichoriKtputli ty for fighting the fight.
Going to keep adding. "Our focus was on finding solutions to global problems and not making a politically correct or gender neutral panel"

I thought we were all trying to find solutions to global problem but clearly I'm wrong. (thanks for reminding me of this @DeepPal_ )
Oh this one seems to have disappeared which is why my numbering is in a funk:

“Problem with Timezones”

There are at least 50 women in IST who I can name off the top of my head who can speak about China. *Cough cough WION news.*
