Seems gov't is busy prepping the storyline for a new normal where #COVID19SK means large numbers of sick every day. What *would* be the tipping points to step backwards from #ReOpenSK? https://twitter.com/ryanmeili/status/1287132179131068416
I remember asking that question, looking hard at the reopen plan when it was rolled out: it contained *no* guidelines, tipping points or thresholds that would alter, defer or roll back any part of the reopening.
The old saying is, you value what you measure. If you're only measuring opening, then closing is anathema.
But here's some truths:
1. Numbers are rising now, and will get worse.
2. We are *still* woefully unprepared.
3. More people will die.
If you want to have things open, fine. Take the next steps:
1. Mandate masks in public.
2. Make policies around thresholds for closing--that way, people in hard-hit areas know what to do (what closes, what changes).
3. Fix the reporting. At least to the old health districts.
4. You know that if #'s rise, kids get sick and die, schools will close. So have that plan in place *now*. Many teachers could have used weeks and weeks in spring to prep online classes properly. That's a brutal missed opportunity.
5. Have weekly meetings with the experts at @VIDOInterVac. Please use our national-level resources and expertise properly. They know faster than anyone else what's happening and what the virus is doing.
6. Plan for safe schools. Fund #covid safety in schools. Do this right -- that's not a political game, it's the right thing to do. And you know it. That's your kids and grandkids. And they are scared and deserve your best effort.
Plan for a safe election. Make that a major priority. A pandemic election is *not* the same as a regular election. Rise up. Meet Saskatchewan where they are: at the community level, looking for leadership. And a safe election.
Please add what you think I have missed. I'm sure there's more that can and should be done.
