They take a good cause, they take a concern you have about society or present day politics and they leech off that. Suck right in under your skin like ticks and then you need a something - usually a *big* something to move on.
My big something was Bosnia. I knew Bosnians, from before times. I met them after and my mouthed platitudes didn’t last 2 minutes in the company of people who’d lived that stuff.

Awful. Dreadful. Very clever and committed and thoughtful people dedicated to awfulness.
I’ve always said that the hard left is made up of very clever and thoughtful and caring people led by people who would literally fuck you in the eye with a broken bottle if it brought the Revolution 2 minutes closer. I stand by that.
