Good afternoon! We have a special #FieldWorkFriday thread for you. Our field teams are en route to their next sites, so we will discuss a single important station this week. This is station CHN on Chernaburna Island. It was the closest station to Tuesday's M7.8 #SimeonofEQ. 1/4
Stations in the Aleutians are difficult, not only to get to, but also to power and retrieve the data. Below you can see (left to right) a typical station schematic, a pic of the CHN hut with mounted solar panels, and the ~20 solar rechargeable batteries inside. 2/4
Getting the data to AEC requires a series of radio links from @UNAVCO partner stations. 1st the data is recorded by a Q330 datalogger. Then it's sent from CHN via radio links to Nagai Island, to Popof Island, & then to Sand Point, where it is sent via DSL to AEC in Fairbanks 3/4
Finally, it is run thru a real-time auto-detection algorithm, which looks for EQs & attempts to get a location. The data is added to a large database w/ all other incoming data from all AEC & partner sites. Analysts then review every EQ detected, & look for missed events. 4/4
