Speaking of fascism, there’s something unnerving about this breathless nostalgia for the symbology of Hitler’s Olympics when the torch-lighting was the brainchild of Nazi propaganda that wanted to place the 3rd Reich in a trajectory of civilizational perfection w/ Ancient Greece.
For a long time, I was under the impression that torch-lighting was a part of Grecian sports tradition before I learnt about fascist iconography. A lot of people duly let Riefenstahl off the hook for shooting Jesse Owens with the same reverence as the Nazis at Nuremberg.
You know what’s scary? The uncritical repetition of fascist visual propaganda, uncritical approach to international sports politics that reify the nation-state and the ethnopolitics therein.
If there’s any place that fascism has creeped effortlessly into our everyday lives, it’s visuality.
