I said it last night on our Decolonise launch panel but again, launching a commission and reviewing policy means nothing if you refuse to hold those in positions of power accountable for their actions- instead hiding behind the smokescreen of 'needing culture change' https://twitter.com/PalatinateUK/status/1286579659275153408
I have seen members of university staff- some of whom are tasked with leading this work- say nothing as I have cried about the racism and transphobia I have been subjected to this year
a parody Facebook account popped up this year, making jokes such as 'i wanna be 500 genders' and clearly mocking pronouns by saying 'i identify as a he/him male', the same year as I became the first non binary sabbatical officer at the su
I have watched as members of university staff justify engage with these posts, laugh react to them, comment on them with an apology of nothing more than "I'm sorry if you were offended, I was laugh reacting for other reasons"
as the person who instigated all SU staff members putting pronouns in theiremails, who lobbied for the su to introduce pronoun badges, it's hard to take as anything but personal when I see university employees interact with posts that are just dressed up attack helicopter jokes
as a mixed race officer who has spoken openly and candidly about my experiences of racism within the university and worked to improve the experiences of students of colour I have seen the same people who now post black squares for BLM again engage with posts mocking my work
so you know what, I'm tired, I've stayed silent for considerably too long, what has happened this year should never happen again, but currently I do not have faith that this university team will do anything other than sticking plaster solutions to protect their reputation
