/6 Hi I’m Claire 👋 I’m a PhD student at @DICE_Kent and my research focuses on private land conservation in Britain. During lockdown, I’ve spent most of my time on zoom talking to lots of farmers & landowners to find out what they think about #rewilding! 👩‍🌾🦉🌳🐺🌸👨‍🌾
/6 Many conservation orgs have launched rewilding projects over the past decade, with proposals to #rewild species such as beavers & birds of prey🦅 Recently @KentWildlife received lots of media attention for their plans to introduce bison to Blean woods nr Canterbury #DICECON20
/6 While approx 72% of the UK is farmed, conservation charities only own ~2% of UK land. With so much land under private ownership and managed for agriculture, landowners & farmers will need to be included in future plans if rewilding is to succeed on a large scale 🧑‍🌾 #DICECON20
/6 To find out what farmers & landowners think about #rewilding in Britain, me & three @DICE_Kent MSc students ( @IrisTruscott, @m1tche11, and @ElysiaScarlett) interviewed 90 farmers from Kent, East Anglia, Oxfordshire, northern England & the Scottish Highlands 👩‍🌾🧑‍🌾 #DICECON20
/6 We asked what they think about passive & active rewilding, reintroducing species from wading birds to wolves, and whether they would rewild their own land. We can’t wait to share the results of this project… as soon as we have finished transcribing our interviews! #DICECON20
/6 I’d like to thank our fab supervisors @AnotherBobSmith, Zoe Davies & @wildbusiness. Thanks @EnvEast & @NERCscience for funding this research. We’d also like to thank the orgs that helped contact farmers & finally all of the farmers who spoke to us about rewilding! #DICECON20
