Great that @guardian is taking this story seriously but this follow-up story starts with some misconceptions - the whole point of cathedral choristerships is that they are NOT just for richer families. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jul/23/decision-to-disband-sheffield-cathedral-choir-strikes-discordant-note 1/5
Scholarships and bursaries from the cathedrals’ own funds and organisations like @_cathedralmusic @ @CSAChoir enable boys & girls from all backgrounds to benefit from this wonderful musical & academic education. 2/5
Also, there are many models but the choristers are usually trained to sing a vast range of church music not by their school music teachers but by the highly skilled organists & choir directors of the cathedrals, early in the morning and after school. 3/5
More and more cathedral music depts are sharing their skills with state schools in projects such as @StPaulsLondon’s wonderful work in Hackney & @GlosCathedral’s primary school outreach scheme 4/5
And finally, it seems Sheffield Cathedral Choir was already diverse in its intake. I don’t know what the underlying story is in this sad situation but it is not a simple traditional vs modern argument. 5/5
