How bad do you have to be that you are abhorrent even by the standards of slavery?

"The behaviour of Picton as Governor of Trinidad was abhorrent, even in his own era, and not deserving of a place in the Heroes of Wales collection." https://twitter.com/OlivetteOtele/status/1286566432080371715
Re: the British Empire - one of the bleakest things in learning about history is finding out not only that some of your ancestors did terrible things, but that they absolutely had the time of their lives while doing them.
I recently read a memoir about slavery, and I couldn't imagine how bleak it must have felt to be that progressive way back in 1780, fighting for justice while so many were tortured and killed all around you, fearing your people were centuries from freedom.
There's a devastating scene in Olaudah Equiano's memoir where he's seperated from his sister, sold in another country, then months later - by chance - is reunited with her for just one night before she is taken and he never sees her again. His pain reaches across centuries.
Whenever talking about the British Empire, it’s important to remember that we are only discussing a highly sanitised version of it, because the records of its very worst deeds were destroyed over decades by the British government. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Legacy
