I put this picture up earlier as my not so photogenic moment, but I gotta tell you that this was probably one of my favorite interactions in Afghanistan. This dude's a cop, one of 2 criminal activities, or whatever they called it, cops in my district. Basically a detective.
Why is that cool? Because we pump millions of dollars into counter-terrorism police + border patrol police in Afghanistan, have huge organizations that won't leave their compounds, but here's these 2 dudes basically trying to solve crimes in what is the equivalent of a county.
They were 2 of the least hostile officials I met and came across as sincere and hardworking. Seemed surprised I was even talking to them because no one gets into regular ol' criminal policing on the Af-Pak border. It's Taliban all day every day, and who cares about Rule of Law...
..in a place that had warlord rule for >3 decades and crimes are resolved through killings and subsequent blood feuds? Anyway, I thought those dudes were cool af and there's probably a sitcom or a screenplay in that scenario somewhere. 'Kunar 5-0', lol.
Noticed I'm doing a lot more thinking, as in 'The Thinker', with a beard. Like the facial hair is giving me a "hmmmm..." on life. Also good, hands on hips. My photojournalist friend said I do that a lot. I asked "should I stop?" and she said I should probably just do more of it.
Dude on the left got shot btw. Survived and I hear he's doing fine. One of those "an inch this way and it's your femoral artery and you'll bleed out, two inches that way and say goodbye to your testicles" so he was as lucky as a GSW survivor can be.
I'm in so much Multicam there I could practically be anonymous federal goon squad.
