Before we start, I'd like to thank the IPS offcr who gave me the details. Interestingly, he still leads teams of SOG and DVF into the naxal infested jungles for operations.

Special Operation Group (SOG)
• Estb - 2004
• HQ - Chandaka
• Initially sanctioned - 543
• Strenght - 1200/1250
1 SOG team consists of 25 Cdos which is usually headed by a Sub Inspector (SI) rank offcr.

• There are currently 40-45 SOG teams currently active in Odisha. These teams are attached to Disct SP for 6 months & are then rotated n attached w other Disct.
• There are currently 4 sub-bases - -Chandaka (HQ)
-Koraput
-Rourkela.
These sub bases also act as trg facilities.

Training is carried out in the 2 sub-bases and HQ. Trg lasts for 2 months and commandos are also sent to Greyhounds (AP), MSG (Manesar) & CTJWS (Kanker) for advanced trg.

Just like Chhattisgarh's STF, SOG is also PHQ controlled, deployment is decided by the PHQ. Disct SP has no control over the attachment and detachment of teams.
The state govt. in every 2 yrs reviews the working of SOG and takes decision regarding sanctioning posts, weapons etc

• SOG personnel are drawn from Disct Pol, OSAP & IRB. Once they complete a tenure of 2+1 yrs or upon reaching the age of 35 personnel join their parent unit.
• SOG personnel are given 50% of their basic pay as allowances.

SOG's success can be attributed to Intelligence based ops they carry out as they work closely with Special Intel Wing (SIW).
Also an interesting point, SOG personnel, most of the time have turned out to be the "fittest" amongst all in the All India Police Cdo Competition

This unit has also been conferred with 1 Ashok Chakra (Posthumous) Assistant Commandant Pramod Kumar Sathpathy in 2008
WEAPONS (USED) -
Sig Sauer 556 (pic1), Sig Sauer 553 (last pic), Glock Pistol, INSAS, SLR, ARM1 & 51mm mortar.
Other weapons such as B&T MP9 are present in the Inventory but are seldom taken out for ops.

District Voluntary Force (DVF)
1 DVF team consists of 25 personnel who are led by an SI rank officer.
Like Chhattisgarh's DRG, DVF too is a Disct Police controlled force and the Disct SP has full control over it.

DVF consists of locals of the Disct and some SOG members. Both are taken in for 5 yrs, SOG Cdos upon completion join their unit and locals are absorbed as Constables in the Disct force. This again boosts the capabilities of the Disct police as the CTs are aware of ops & tactics.
Unique thing about DVF is that it consists of both Locals (who act as scouts & fighter) & SOG cdo (who have the combat expertise). This combination makes them efficient.
Even Greyhounds had Home Guards (Scout) Platoons in their teams but they were not a part of the main force.

DVF's strength is based on operational requirements. The requirement is tabled by SP and is approved by PHQ.
Usually a Disct SP has 2-3 teams of DVF (50 personnel) but sometimes due to intense combing ops SPs have had 7 DVF teams (175 personnel) under their command.
