..the #Spirit, the #Yukti (coming together) of #Time, #Place and #Nourishment.

They must seek to bring to this world

..‘a pregnant woman should be handled without being upset in any way.’

Fear, injury, hot food & drinks

..and the use of alcohol are a few of the activities and mental attitudes that can cause miscarriage. (17/25)

18-Potential causes of damage to the fetus include the mechanical (such as traveling over a bumpy road)

..the physiological (addiction to bitter foods, which aggravates #Vata and yields weak child) (18/25)

19-..and the psychological (intolerance in the mother, which creates a fierce, deceitful or envious offspring)

Charaka emphasizes that all such prohibitions apply both to mother and father up to the moment of conception (19/25)

20-..and that the psychological prohibitions apply to both parents indefinitely.

Some of the peculiar cravings a pregnant woman feels are due to

..physical imbalance or deficiencies

.. because she ends up giving much of her #Rasa to the fetus (20/25)

..which strain the Mother's own waste-management system.

The stereotypical craving for pickles and ice cream

..reflects the system’s craving for more sweet, heavy, milky juice for nourishment (21/25)

22-..and D sour and spicy tastes needed to help digest it.

These desires reflect the preferences and aversions of the fetus,

..which are carried over from previous existences and transmitted to the mother..

..influencing her feelings and perceptions. (22/25)

23-After conception, the soul awaiting birth hovers near the womb.

When the fetal heart begins to beat

..the latent mind of the soul becomes activated into the #consciousness of its new existence (23/25)
