Finally did it. Cancelled my subscription to the NYT today after 20 years. It’s been a long time coming (1/8)
It started several years ago, as an increasing number of stories adopted an uncrital oppressor/oppressed lens. This was magnified during coverage of BLM in 2013 and MeToo a few years later
These stories shone a light on important social issues worthy of greater attention. But they were increasingly applied uncritically and haphazardly (Covington kids, Azis Ansari)
With Trump’s election NYT blew a gasket. Again, there was much to criticize, but the war against him crossed the line of their own journalistic practices, including Russiagate.
Today the paper maintains its role in full throated opposition to the current administration. Fine—but it no longer can be considered the paper of record.
Worse, it has adopted critical race and intersectionality as their guiding lights in covering many other issues. They hired a gender editor and pushed the contentious 1619 project, even as keys parts discredited by historians.
I have been on the verge of cancelling over the last couple of weeks with the latest editorial board “resignations” (Bennett and Weiss). I brooded on this. Today I see more peddling of identity politics with the “Nice White Parents” podcast. Ugh.
Most importantly, the NYT has placed ideological over truth. This prevents us from arriving at a better understanding our world.
