Okay, I have time while I wait for feedback on my POV deck. Let's do this! https://twitter.com/Illywrites/status/1286404500413132801
The reason I feel advertising has played a role in people not wanting to read anymore.

In an effort to create mass comms messaging we have helped remove nuance from conversations that require because it "muddies" up our ability to tell stories
Our industry isn't concerned with the truth, just what is the most simple story to tell a story that also communicates the RTBs that clients have deemed important
So what happens when the truth isn't the focus of what you are trying to communicate? You become very comfortable omitting or overly simplifying the truth for the sake of selling products.
My favorite category to look at this is with pharma, especially when it comes to diabetic information.

Pharma has taken a complex disease and flatten out the story to make the avg person believe everything in an infographic is correct with question.
you tell me i am diabetic because of xyz and I need to do abc to feel better, I am not going to question it or go out and read any actual studies. Why? Because you've positioned yourself as the expert thanks to overly simplified messaging + media dollars.
Diabetic messaging would have you believe that the avg diabetic is overweight, eats like crap and is pretty much at fault for their condition.

If people engaged the studies and read the literature, they would have a better understanding of the disease
I have no reason to read anything because I can rely on ads to tell me the information and I have learned to "trust" ads to give me the correct information.

This is especially true for pharma ads
My mom is a diabetic. My mom is around 140lbs and always has been thin. None of the information in pharma ads around diabetes applies to her.

People are always surprised when they see my mom cus they hear diabetic and think she must be fat. Why do people think that? Ads.
No one makes any attempt to read any actual literature around the disease because they rely on ads to tell them the "truth"
