Women who work towards a career - they "aren't family orientated" or are "trying to prove something";

Women who wear what they want - they are looking for the "attention" of another;

Women who don't want children, they are "abnormal" or are "too focused on their career";

Women who have a termination, well "they just haven't thought about it long enough";

Lesbians - well Lesbians "just haven't found the right man yet" or "they hate men";

Women who refuse to make a man the centre of their universe - well they are just "too independently minded for her own good";

Women who drink, smoke or take drugs are "women of low morals";

Women who don't see motherhood in their life plans are "not real women";

Black women who refuse to take any shit and who hold people to account - they are just "angry black women";

Women who call out and challenge sexism and misogyny "just aren't team players" or are "too sensitive";

Women who in chronic pain are "faking it" or "playing up"

Women who highlight and call out the abusive behaviour and actions of men are "too sensitive" or are just "on her time of the month";

Women who refuse to allow men to get away with violence, rape and sexual assault - "they changed their minds" or "led on" their attacker;

These are all things I have seen or heard about women over the last year. These are things which many women will be only too aware of as it has been [or is being] levelled at them. We were all brought into this world by a woman.

The above aren't just flippant comments or words hammered onto an screen by an anonymous, faceless person. These words wound. These words hurt. These words and the attitudes which underpin the mindset of the person who utters them are toxic and altogether malevolent. (...)
How can someone look at their - mother, sister, auntie, their friends, their wife/gf, their caregiver, their nurses or doctor or dentist, their teacher or lawyer etc etc - in the face and conclude any of the above is okay to think let alone say. It puzzles and saddens me.

We need to call out this type of stuff when we see it. We need to do it now and we need to keep doing it - day in, day out!

What @AOC had to endure the other day at the Capitol is atrocious but it all too common in this world we live in.

If you stand by and say nothing then you are complicit. You are complicit by inaction. You are reinforcing the narrow minded, sexist and misogynistic statements above and you are saying we live in a world were it okay to say these things.

You can see every day sexism in so much of the news coverage of women leaders like @NicolaSturgeon, @jacindaardern, @AOC, @SpeakerPelosi, @carolecadwalla, @alisonthewliss, @JeaneF1MSP etc.
