Orthodox Wedding on a budget: THREAD⬇️💒☦️💞
1. Purchasing your wedding gown: David’s Bridal has multiple sales throughout the year, you can buy a dress for as low as $90. You can opt to buy a dress online as well, there are many Etsy stores that will customize colors, sizes, and fabrics for you.
2. Accessories: Most wedding boutiques greatly overprice accessories like shoes, veils, bridal shawls/jackets, and jewelry. For my wedding, I purchased shoes on clearance at Macy’s. I purchased costume jewelry from Unique Vintage to go with my dress. Etsy is also a great option.
3. Alterations: Davids Bridal alterations are terrible and overpriced. Look up local dry cleaners and check their reviews. Try to avoid bridal seamstresses. In a major city, alterations cost $900+. I managed to find a 4.5-star (200 reviews) seamstress to do mine for $300.
4. Suit/Tuxedo: Originally my fiancé was going to rent a suit from Men’s Wearhouse. Their suits are poor quality, ill-fitting, and do not come in flattering styles. He opted to buy a custom suit from Indochino. Indochino has many different flattering styles. continued...
... For the price of 2 suit rentals, he bought his suit. I took his measurements while following their tutorial. They even have an algorithm to correct measurements! https://www.indochino.com/
5. Stefana: If your church follows the Russian liturgical tradition it is likely they will supply you with wedding crowns. Stefana can be easily purchased online, if you are crafty you can make Stefana with 10 gauge wire, ribbons, beads, or fake flowers/greenery.
6. Wedding Candles: There are several tutorials showing how to make wedding candles. I made mine with 10” ivory candles, ribbon, lace, silk flowers, and bead appliqués. These can run very expensive on Etsy so I recommend making your own or buying some from a monastery.
7. Reception: The average reception venue costs $13k. Our Priest is allowing us to use the hall next door for free. Some other churches around us charge $300 for the hall, which is still very reasonable.
8. Catering: Our total catering cost is around $450 for 30 people. That's around $15 per person, while the average is $70 per person. Buffet style catering from a grocery store is extremely affordable. You could also try for a potluck wedding, although this may be challenging.
Catering Continued: Remember you do not always have to serve a full meal. You can try serving heavy appetizers, charcuterie, assorted desserts, etc. We are serving chicken, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, fruit/cheese tray, finger sandwiches, a veggie tray, etc.
Continued: Please do not stress yourself out by trying to make your own food. Jewel Osco, Kroger, Meijer, Walmart, Whole Foods, etc all do catering! Remember you can order the main meal components from a fancier place while getting cheese/fruit/rolls from a less expensive place.
9. Cake: We ordered a small cake for us to use in our cutting ceremony from a grocery store bakery while ordering cupcakes for everyone else! This is a very economical choice. If you're not into wedding cake order some cookie trays, cannolis, brownies, etc for a dessert table!
10. Reception decor: We ordered a set of white table cloths, fancy-looking disposable dinnerware, cute candle holders, and tea light candles. You can also use fake flower garland or fake flowers in a vase as decoration.
