Disney's delay of major theatrical releases reveals a lot about what Disney thinks of cinema's future during and after COVID-19 imo (thread)
1. The COVID-19 vaccine wont be distributed this year. People will not head back to theaters en masse until at least next year.
2. Digital releases either a.) can't offset cinema losses or b.) aren't worth undermining their relationship with theater chains over (for context: Universal's Trolls World Tour)
3. Awards season
will
not
be
the
same. I predict the 2021 oscars will be postponed. I'd bet Disney has insider intel saying the same

Lastly, Disney thinks their movies are so good/so hyped they'll break through the glut of post-pandemic releases
I wrote a piece for @MorningBrew in April that goes into more depth on some of these points: https://www.morningbrew.com/daily/stories/2020/04/10/movie-industry-uncertain-future-post-coronavirus
