So, it turns out a wide range of views on letting health professionals, esp junior doctors call consultants by their first names.

Have had some interesting replies, some raising interesting points. But WTF you lot? Doctors ARE NOT special.

⬇️
What other profession to grown adults call their boss in a titled fashion.

Do air stewards call their pilots Miss X?
Do band 5 pharmacist call their band 8D Mr X
Do junior llawyers call senior partner Mr X?

I don’t think so, so don’t buy the it’s respect/culture dictates... ⬇️
Some BAME people told me that truly they couldn’t call a senior person by their first name but why doesn’t this rule apply in other professions?

Medicine has established this weird culture which is obsessed with doctor being something prophetical.
WRT not being recognised as a Doctor by colleagues. I cleary don’t have the perspective of being F or BAME. I look about 12 so people usually think I am the medical student.

But my request wasn’t about me. I can always tell people I am the consultant. Many of the replies... ⬇️
Have been about how uncomfortable to Consultant feels about not being recognised as such. Can be corrected/informed.

My experience all round is that no matter how kind/approachable/wonderful you are, first names foster such a different and nicer working environment. ⬇️
To those who argue you can’t persuade juniors to call you by first name even if you try. Bollocks. Persist. Show them you really feel OK with it. If you give up they won’t think you mean it. Nobody calls me dr furmedge at work unless they’ve just met me because I persist.
As senior people we have to try to get rid of this god complex and open up hierarchies and conversations. I will genuinely die on this hill.

PS above discussion not applicable to patients or what team address you as in front of pts.
What I find particularly odd is that an F2 for example will work in ED using first names, then move to medicine or surgery and use Dr whatever. That’s not comfort, that’s culture. ⬇️
Does it really diminish your status to be called by your first name?

If it was the norm accepted practice with no tradition, would it really feel uncomfortable calling your cons Dan?

PS MedTwitter really is something thesedays isn’t it. 😂 Goodnight all.
