Horror Pastoral
Tourists enter into a wilderness and encounter something ancient but disturbingly familiar. The inhabitants are seen as simple, even inbred, but connected in ways the interlopers are not. There is a cross pollination through music or ritual- infection. "I'm lost."

Midsommar
In Deliverance, after arriving in a settlement for gas, one interloper peers through a window and sees a disfigured and disabled child. These narratives have an undercurrent of genetic cul de sac. "Talk about genetic deficiencies-isn't that pitiful?" They say.
Pastoral Horror taps into a deep, subconscious fear inside all of us. "Civilization" is seen to be "clean" and manifests itself by separating people from each other. When the wilderness is entered there is a threat of infection. That those who live there are TOO connected.
