This story includes Hurricane Iniki (1992) and Hurricane Dot (1959) — both hit Kauaʻi. It doesn’t include Hurricane Iwa (1982), which passed within 25 miles of Kauai with peak winds of 90 mph. Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai in 1992 as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 mph. It is the most powerful hurricane to hit Hawaii since record keeping began in 1950. Six people died.
