Getting ready for the hurricane – bei Tantalus
A hurricane warning was just issued for Oahu and it was announced that Hawaii is on the third consecutive day of record-breaking COVID-19 cases

Douglas to remain a hurricane as it passes through the Hawaiian Islands. A hurricane warning has been issued for Maui County, and a hurricane warning remains in effect for Oahu and Kauai counties. https://twitter.com/nhc_pacific/status/1287397274163666944?s=21 https://twitter.com/nhc_pacific/status/1287397274163666944
Woke up like this #hiwx
People on Maui being told to shelter in place and stay informed as Hurricane Douglas approaches #hiwx https://twitter.com/Hawaii_EMA/status/1287456767870459904
This story includes Hurricane Iniki (1992) and Hurricane Dot (1959) — both hit Kauaʻi. It doesn’t include Hurricane Iwa (1982), which passed within 25 miles of Kauai with peak winds of 90 mph. Iwa devastated Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, and Oʻahu, killed 4 people, & left 500 people homeless. https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1287455416025337858
Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai in 1992 as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 mph. It is the most powerful hurricane to hit Hawaii since record keeping began in 1950. Six people died. Just got this emergency alert for Oahu and I hear the sirens in the distance #HurricaneDouglasHawaii

. @govhawaii: As we speak, Maui County is receiving the brunt of #hurricanedouglas. People on Oahu and Maui should be in the final stages of preparing. https://twitter.com/StarAdvertiser/status/1287501319922745346
. @MayorKirkHNL: This is my first time as mayor of Oahu that a hurricane has passed so close to the island. Effects will start around 2 pm and continue until tomorrow. We have a triple threat: rain, wind, and storm surge. We expect the greatest impact from Waimanalo to Haleiwa.
. @MayorKirkHNL: We have opened 13 shelters on Oahu. The largest is at the Hawaii Convention Center. As of now, there are 350 people at these shelters. About 300 people are at the Hawaii Convention Center and 34 at the Nanakuli Shelter. https://twitter.com/honolulu_parks/status/1287221041941499911
Maui Mayor @MikeVictorino: Heavy rains and strong winds are hitting East Maui right now. The major effects of #HurricaneDouglas should last until 5 pm on Maui.
Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami: "We have been through this before. We know the drill.” #HurricaneDouglas
. @NWSHonolulu John Bravender: #HurricaneDouglas is tracking very close to Oahu and Kauai. A hurricane like this does not go in a straight line. Any wobbling could bring it closer to the islands.
. @NWSHonolulu John Bravender: #HurricaneDouglas could still come closer to the Hawaiian Islands. Even if you’re not close to the core of the hurricane, you can still get significant damage.
. @govhawaii: #HurricaneDouglas is a hurricane — not a tropical storm. People should be prepared to shelter in place. Do a final check on properties & secure anything that might become a projectile in the yard. Some forecasts anticipated that Douglas would weaken — but it did not.
. @MayorKirkHNL: #HurricaneDouglas could be a life-threatening event. We don’t want to see anyone get hurt. That’s why people need to plan for the very worst. Now is the time to hunker down or be ready to evacuate.
. @govhawaii: This is the closest approach of a hurricane that we have had at least in the last decade. Be prepared for hurricane force winds. We prepare for the worst and hope for the best. People on Oahu and Kauai should be taking final steps to get ready now. #HurricaneDouglas
