Stream of conscious thread on Dysphoria and Transmedicalism

I've made some posts about what is or is not dysphoria, and this thread is to explain why those posts are technically garbage takes that simply should be used to help ppl even consider the fact they might be trans

1/11
1) You dont need dysphoria to be trans

2) Sometimes stuff you wouldn't consider dysphoria can be classified as dysphoria by someone else

These statements aren't conflicting because "dysphoria" is a bullshit concept.

2/11
many trans and non-binary ppl require healthcare specific to their needs. cis ppl historicially do not want our needs to be met. so what are you to do?

well, well-meaning ppl medicalized it. treat the suffering we experience because us just *wanting* hormones or surgery

3/11
is not enough for gatekeepers. So you get dysphoria. The "pain caused by the conflict between your gender and gender expression". Medicalized and digestible for cis ppl to pity us enough to help.

But being trans or non-binary is not just about doom and gloom.

4/11
In fact, most if not all ppl transition in order to be happier. Not everyone is even necessarily miserable beforehand, they just know they could be happier messing with their presentation.

And so historically they've played the tap dance to get what they need.

5/11
However, now the popular understanding of trans ppl has been "sad sack who always knew their body sucked and just HAD to get help" instead of something empowering due to the confirmation bias.

And our community has so far had to cling to it because it gets us healthcare.

6/11
But because that is the "popular" understanding of what being trans is, you get all sorts of ppl who don't fit that mold. Who don't *completely hate their body*. Who don't mind presenting in different ways, but may otherwise be interested in physical transition.

So when I make a thread about gender euphoria being dysphoria, or someone talks about what dysphoria is, it is simply a way to try and widen the term to include others, and assist those of us who don't fit the linear model created by cis society of what it means to be trans

8/11
But at the end of the day, the concept of dysphoria is muddy. Being trans is not a medical issue. Being trans or non-binary just means you don't fully identify with the gender you were assigned.

I like to make threads about niche ways you can "experience dysphoria" bcuz

9/11
seeing stuff like that helped me understand myself, and in the past, I equated trans to "having dysphoria". Calling my experience dysphoria helped me internalize that I could even be trans.

But ultimately the term is dumb. We're all just trying to be happy.

10/11
If you're unsure if you're trans or non-binary, try shit to see what makes you happy.

Wear new clothes
Fuck with presentation
Start hormones (which are largely reversible)

There is no right way to be trans or non-binary. You get to decide if you are or not, dysphoria or no
