What @anima_tk, @rp_browne and others have done with Wait, There’s More is nothing short of brilliant. A thoughtful, incisive, genuinely interesting show that tackled race and other tricky subjects in a way very few legacy outlets have been able to do. They’ve busted their asses and they’ve succeeded. To lay them off at a time of a major race reckoning is exactly the kind of foolish, visionless decision I’ve come to expect from mainstream outlets who seem to get off on their own mediocrity.
Global says it’s returning to “trusted, objective journalism.” Pushing that narrative is so out of touch. Journos should be accurate, but they don’t have to be objective about human rights violations. https://twitter.com/jsource/status1286362832607510529?s=21
It’s unfortunate that @globalnews has chosen to do this when it’s been called out for a culture of anti-Blackness and racist microaggressions.
If outlets want to stay relevant, they should be fostering journalists who challenge the norms, not laying them off.
I’ve got no doubt both @rp_browne and @anima_tk will move onto better things. I don’t have as much confidence in Global.
Anyway, I’m very interested in continuing to report on how Canadian media is handling this moment. If you’ve been laid off or want to chat about anything my DMs are open.
