I hate that entertainment and life are always the first things cut in a round of layoffs or restructuring. It's the section where you can truly have free reign to make a publication stand out and make it as creative as you want but sadly many news big wigs still see it as fluff.
And we're in a time when we need it more than ever! Arts and life are an easy entry point into different communities and voices that make up a city! You can make it as fun or serious as you want! It's a link to politics, economics, societal values, it's got range, bebe!
Maybe I'm projecting but I always sense a hint of sexism when it comes to dismissal of life content b/c it's historically associated with the domestic realm and women's unpaid labour as if cooking, health & entertainment aren't mega billion-dollar industries that affect all of us
Find me a reporter outside of life who can link health, food, culture, identity politics, history, the latest tiktok drama AND give you a weeknight recipe that can be made gluten-free. We've got the range!
