Informing others should be at the heart of everyone learning about social issues. What good is knowing about Marxism, queer theory, colonization if you’re unable to inform people in a meaningful way? Learning only for the sake of being smart isn’t sustainable I think.
Imagine you’re trying to inform your family and friends, if you can’t use language that they can understand, or have what you say feel meaningful, then you need to clarify your intentions and understanding of the subject. If you’re able to explain it to a child, you’re an expert.
I have an exercise where I visualize myself trying to inform my family. I think I get the most amount of clarity during these exercises. Asking myself “why am I doing this? To seem smart? To seem clever? To have people know I’m such a caring person?” your intentions are important
Have an honest look at your intentions of learning something. If you’re doing it for yourself, that’s fine I think, but it shouldn’t be the end goal, the end goal should be so you can pass on knowledge to people in a meaningful way.
