#ISOJ2020 To this question: Different countries and parts of the world have varying degrees of a patriarchal hierarchy. Kirsi spoke some on how things stand out when they are not the norm. 1/?
What do you think it will take for people to understand that their “norm” may not be the ideal norm? Especially for those who don’t have the means or privilege to travel and see how other cultures differ from their own? 2/?
I think it's important to note that journalism is not the end of media. There are so many ways to see how others live and what's possible. My own exploratory theoretical piece was originally inspired by study of Marvel movies, which perhaps do as much as anyone to influence norms
So then it's a matter of discussing new norms, challenging existing ones, figuring out how to keep parts of normative expectations while discarding other parts...or, as I write in my paper, doing normative "triage." Keep what works for what you now understand to be morally right
