pls read this very important thread!!!!! https://twitter.com/omarsrashad/status/1286368007929786368
i have the privilege to be attending @sacstate to get my journalism degree. i’m proud that i will be graduating from here in spring 2021. but the stigma around state schools and the elitism that gatekeeps many talented journalists from the industry is real.
i haven’t even graduated college and i am already having anxiety about how i will find a job in journalism coming out of a CSU, even though i’m getting just as good of an education as students at “elite” universities.
i started journalism later in college than most of my peers (i changed my major in my fourth semester) and every day i feel like i’m struggling to catch up with my fellow (amazing) student journalists.
my experience as of now is limited to my student-run paper, @TheStateHornet — which has no doubt changed my life. but i have concerns about being able to find another internship before i graduate.
...bc more and more, it seems that experience at a student-run paper and a state school degree won’t be enough to cut it for getting a reporting job right out of college. +often, internships meant to help students gain experience give preference to students at “elite” schools.
from my POV right now, i’m either going to have to accept a low-paying internship or fellowship post-grad, OR go to grad school (goodbye $$) to be able to find a full-time job. maybe i’m wrong, but that’s honestly how it feels as of now.
while i have the privilege to potentially accept one of these options, a lot of journalism students don’t.
i work incredibly hard as a reporter and an editor, and so do many of my peers. i’ve had the privilege to meet many talented CSU journalists through the state hornet, social media + @CSUstudentwire. they are all just as deserving of internships and jobs as those at elite schools.
(meant to say "elite" schools in that last one)
(also, the important thread i referenced that people need to read is the one embedded in the first tweet by @omarsrashad — i just wanted to add my thoughts and got carried away)
