Honesty - be open about who you are and why you want to talk
Acknowledgement - a simple 'sorry' for what they're going through goes a long way
Accuracy - getting details wrong can retraumatise a subject

Consent - manage your interviewee's expectations, they must know what they're consenting to, eg. how much they'll be in the report, whether sensitive photos could appear again in future, who else will be in the report, and so on #JSTMasterclass
Control - how can you give some power back to someone who's had power taken away from them through trauma? Victims say they need to know why sequences are being filmed, having things explained and checks to ensure they are comfortable #JSTMasterclass
Communication and rapport is vital, as is ensuring your emotions don't affect your objectivity #JSTMasterclass
Compassion - treating people sensitively, with respect and understanding. This starts from the moment you make the approach to a subject #JSTMasterclass
You are both human and reporter - not letting editorial pressure affect how you treat a sensitive subject #JSTMasterclass
That said, mistakes are inevitable, you can only do your best, what really matters is your attitude and your humility when you get something wrong #JSTMasterclass
