I COMPLETELY AGREE. I was so proud to see @kaniehtiio show everyone how the Haudenosaunee roll on #CanadaReads.
Yes, we put up blockades when people don't listen. But before we get to that point, we listen deeply, ask hard questions, and speak necessary, if difficult, truths. https://twitter.com/jessewente/status/1286362241072234498

We don't usually get the opportunity to show that side of ourselves to the rest of the world. We don't usually complimented for our diplomacy, consensus building skills or honesty - despite heavily influencing American democracy and the US Constitution. But that's who we are.
Our Thanksgiving Address is essentially a gratitude prayer that acknowledges all elements of creation and our place within it. Our decisions were originally made *only* via the consensus of 50 chiefs. @kaniehtiio reminded me of these beautiful parts of our history. Nya:weh, Tiio
In regards to the "trauma porn" discussion. As an Indigenous writer who has lived a life full of trauma and poverty who chose to write about my life, I struggled with this. Every NDN knows Non-Indigenous ppl tend to be fascinated with seeing our pain, our poverty, our trauma.
I didn't want to give into that. I also was concerned about my Indigenous readers, who I knew wouldn't benefit from seeing the same pain they felt everyday.
However, the fact is, it happened. If I ignored it, I wouldn't be my life.
