Seeing a lot of discourse about whether an art degree is necessary.
If you’re an American citizen, planning on working in America forever, never want to be a professor, and have the self-discipline to teach yourself, then it’s not!
Sadly, that’s not everyone’s position.

I am from Brazil, and I got a BFA from the Art Institute.
The education was not ideal, but if I didn’t have that degree, I wouldn’t have gotten my work visa to work in games in the USA.
The weight immigration puts on your degree is immense. This goes for many other countries.

About self-discipline: not everyone thrives when learning 100% alone. Some people need external accountability, deadlines, etc.
That doesn’t mean they’re bad or not driven.
You need to be honest with yourself, know what kind of learner you are, and make choices accordingly.

I consider myself to be a pretty driven person, but I don’t think I could have spent 3 years learning alone instead and had the same results by the time of graduation.
Of course, this is a purely personal thing that varies from person to person.

Fun fact, I got introduced to zbrush in college, and probably would have never picked it up otherwise!
What I’m trying to say is, blanket statements like “skip college, learn on YouTube” are valid, but don’t take a lot of factors into consideration.
Getting a degree is a serious, personal decision, with pros and cons. Hopefully everyone can make the best decision for themselves
