I've said it, and I'll keep saying it: if your primary source federal police actions in Portland is national news, you're missing the bigger picture. Support the local staff and independent journalists who have inhaled tear gas for 55 nights, doing their job, often without pay.
You can support Portland's independent journalists by tipping them here. All those photos and videos you see on national news? They're the ones who are getting it. This is also a great resource for who to follow.

Here's what happened last night, as told by those who have been covering it for *two months*.
National journalists were in the protests, doing good work. But it's people like Tuck who have the context: the contentious history of Ted Wheeler's relationship with the police, the debate over police tactics that's been ongoing for two months. https://twitter.com/tuckwoodstock/status/1286240956241477636?s=20
Here's the difference that history and knowledge makes in on-the-ground reporting: https://twitter.com/tuckwoodstock/status/1286221124607438849?s=20
And Tuck's thread of the night's events here -- and note that they're filming the ground, not protester's faces, following reports that law enforcement is using livestreams and protest footage to ID protesters. https://twitter.com/tuckwoodstock/status/1286149235230953472?s=20
Sergio Olmos has been doing great reporting, too. His thread of the night is here: https://twitter.com/MrOlmos/status/1286157153342877698?s=20
Again -- here's how Alex Zielinski contextualizes the night. This can only come from someone who knows the Portland protest scene inside and out. https://twitter.com/alex_zee/status/1286355766622879744?s=20
Photojournalists @killendave and @bethnakamura have been doing phenomenal covering the protests for @Oregonian. And so has this camera. https://twitter.com/killendave/status/1286227783543209988?s=20
another reporter who's been doing great work night after night is @TheRealCoryElia -- Cory and other journalists have been arrested by the Portland Police Bureau while doing their jobs. Cory and @Human42LM are part of a lawsuit against them. https://twitter.com/TheRealCoryElia/status/1286190627273629696?s=20
And @DonovanFarley, who gave us this truly iconic photo. https://twitter.com/DonovanFarley/status/1284411412672999425?s=20
(And has also been doing phenomenal work showcasing people who aren't naked)

(also given PDX's love of naked action, and the police reaction to someone with literally zero protection, I'm truly surprised we don't yet have a naked bikeride against police brutality.)
There are SO MANY other folks doing SO MUCH good work, I can't possibly share them all. So again, follow and support the folks on this list.

And support @OPB, @ThePortlandTrib, @Oregonian, @wweek, @portlandmercury, and so many others. Local news is hurting right now, it's one of the worst years for journalism since the Great Recession. We *need* local news. You wouldn't even know about the PDX protests without it.
And national editors: There's a pandemic. Parachute reporting is often extractive to begin with. Flying out your staff puts them and the communities they're visiting at risk, and doing so in a time when *so many* great local reporters have lost their jobs is immoral. Just saying.
HIRE those folks as freelancers.

And everyone else, @SPJOregon is providing microgrants to reporters who lost their jobs. Help support them! https://twitter.com/SPJOregon/status/1282702846383677446?s=20
