Optics, a thread:

#mtgfinance gets blamed for “buyouts” and being the reason people can’t access cards, but the problem with this line of thinking is that it echoes mob mentality and leads to uneducated accusations.

Let me show what’s actually happening here.

Gilded Drake is a singular example of the broader playable-Reserved List index moving up in price. There are justifiable, valid reasons for this:
1. COVID: collectors have been less and less likely to sell out of collections via the mail and buylists have been slashed due to the loss of in-person events, cash flow concerns, etc... Supply across MTG is a real issue.
2. cEDH: this format, still debatably for many, is growing AND becoming a factor in card prices. You may not realize it because, like me, you play in a casual setting for #CMDR #EDH. But trends don’t lie. Look no further than Tarnished Citadel for evidence of this growth.
3. Gilded Drake is excellent in cEDH. It’s among the most played cards in the format post-Flash ban. Because of playability, NM copies are harder to find and will command a premium. Played copies are $150 which is in-line with RL playables like Grim Monolith & Wheel of Fortune.
4. The Reprint Era: we are in a time of #MTG history reminiscent of Chronicles in ‘94-95. The player base has outgrown card supply and WotC knows they need reprints en masse to keep the game accessible. This reinforces the value of the RL broadly.
5. Gilded Drake, like all RL right now, will cool off and hold ~20% higher than its old price. This happens every few years on a near-cyclical manner (check graphs). If you need a Drake, wait! It may take 6-12 months but you’ll be able to find played Drakes for $100 again.
