If you're friends with Catholics, you may have seen posts about #nfpweek. If you know me at all, you probably know that I'm not strictly anti-birth control and I struggle with the oversimplification of issues surrounding NFP.

However, I am very much a proponent of better education about sex and fertility, so here are some fun (and not-so-fun) facts about fertility awareness, illustrated for your viewing pleasure! 👇

1. Toxic productivity culture hurts women. Or, the idea that "anything a man can do, I can do bleeding" is harmful. Sure, we can, but should we? It's okay to listen to your body and take a break! (Also, don't even get me started on maternity leave standards, lol.)

2. American sex ed hinges on mistrust of the female body. This is the antithesis to fertility awareness. "You can get pregnant ANY DAY of your cycle!" No. Women already hate our bodies due to unrealistic beauty standards, now we are taught to fear them too. This is not ok.

3. Tear gas causes miscarriages and disrupts the menstrual cycle, aka that natural fertility we claim to care about. Pro-life people should be against its use. (Rothenberg, Achanta, Svendsen, & Jordt, 2016)

4. Hormones are a part of who we are. As much as our neurons and organs contribute to our thoughts, feelings, and decisions, so do our hormones. Hormonal is not an insult.

5. Fertility awareness is not just a Catholic thing. I discovered this past yr how huge the non-religious FAM community is. One FB group has 29,000(!) members who chart biomarkers & may choose to use barrier methods or other alternatives on fertile days to avoid conceiving.
