I've gotten involved in my school district's committee on reopening schools. It's going to be a hybrid model of in-person and e-learning (until the inevitable full shutdowns). My conclusion: this is putting WAY too much strain on a group already under appreciated by society. 1/8
I'm now doubly worried about the administrators' and teachers' health now that I better appreciate the amount of effort and strain they've had all summer, and the huge crescendo they are now having. We all know how health suffers when stress increases. 2/8
I'm also now doubly pissed at all levels of the government in the US and our society as a whole. The way we've not done the hard things to tamp down the virus and allowed it to run wild...SMH.

Another f-u to the people who are primarily driven by caring for our future. 3/8
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone cared as much about the future as the people employed in our public school system? 4/8
A great thread from @ASlavitt last night that nicely sums up the effects that selfishness (bred by an over-emphasis on personal freedoms) has on our public health, and thus societal freedom: https://twitter.com/ASlavitt/status/1286074978274861058

(btw, I'm a huge fan of personal freedoms) 5/8
So now, I've discovered a new part of the "battle" between the physical health of teachers and students vs. the emotional/social/parental job security/etc. ramifications of e-learning. 6/8
I call it a "battle" (with air quotes indicating my sarcastic use of the word) because I think saying it's one or the other is another false choice that avoids trying to be innovative. Which overemphasizes "get back to normal" behavior that clearly isn't safe. 7/8
Please consider: What are the emotional/social/job/etc. ramifications to multiple generations of teachers and school administrators of having to juggle the multiple learning paths, massive unknowns, and deep care these people have for our kids? 8/8
