TFL/Mayor of London today launched the first online cycle training course for Londoners to give more people the confidence to start cycling (see https://cycleskillsonline.tfl.gov.uk/ ). A friend recently asked me for my own London cycling tips. Here they are 👇(in no particular order):
Firstly, cycling in London isn't as scary as you think. London drivers are more accustomed to cyclists (inc wobbly, no-idea tourists on boris bikes) than anywhere else in the country. There are also more cycle lanes / cycle traffic lights than ever before. It is getting safer.
1/ Don't jump lights: I know it's tempting, especially at a pedestrian crossing with no pedestrians or if you time the lights, but it's a rule you should follow. Don't be that muppet.
2/ Know your route: knowing when to turn so you can get in lane/position is crucial. Pinching Google Maps while cycling one-handed isn't in the guidebook.
3/ Be confident: hesitant cycling leads to hesitant (and often frustrated) drivers. Take control, just don't be an idiot about it.
4/ Don't be afraid about taking up too much space: stay too close to the roadside / parked vehicles 👉 cars will be lured into overtaking when there isn't space. Leaving room actually reduces risk this + you're less likely to be car doored (not pleasant)
5/ Indicate authoritatively: don't let cars guess where you're going, help them out a little. A sudden right swerve isn't doing anyone any favours.
6/ Don't undertake: especially not when there's a left turn ahead for motorists. If you're in a cycle lane you may be forgiven, but beware of pedestrians crossing between cars and other cyclists coming back in lane.
7/ Don't undertake big lorries / vans: if you've ignored no.6, don't ignore no.7. They almost certainly won't see you and the consequences aren't pretty if they decide to swing a left.
8/ Avoid big junctions with lots of options/lanes: especially if you're new to city cycling. Not a long term solution, but get off and walk if you really have to go that route - best for everyone involved.
There are obviously tons more: wear a helmet (duh!), use lights if it's dark, adjust your bike saddle to the right height etc etc, but hopefully a useful steer for people starting out. Happy cycling. 🙌
