Less a COVID update, more a COVID context lesson:

1) When a location gets above ~200 new cases / million / day, the virus has become endemic. Rooting it out requires a multi-month HARSH lockdown. That's what the Chinese did in Wuhan. Took 6 months.
The US is now at that level.
2) US states in yellow are all above that 200 threshold. States in red are above <500>. I'm sure you'll note the NYC area is NOT at that level. Greater NYC was just shy of 500 back in March. They've been under a pretty tight lockdown for five months, and are now down to under 50.
3)Counties in pink are ones that have at least one small urban areas with a new daily case level above <1000>. Counties in red are <rural> areas above 1000.
Once your factor out Greater NYC, you can tell the virus is pretty equal opportunity so far as political alignments go.
4) The US can no longer do more than mitigate COVID– red /blue/urban/rural. Containment/eradication are now simply impossible. This is starting to dawn on some state & federal authorities. How they grapple w/it will determine how long the American economy will remain moribund.
