1/ Latest in the @TorontoStar; I was asked to write about racism within the Chinese Canadian community.
I've been covering stories related to it since 2018, when a group of Chinese activists in Markham protested "illegal border crossers" (ie. refugees). https://www.thestar.com/opinion/contributors/2020/07/23/why-dont-they-just-work-harder-this-kind-of-anti-blackness-is-prevalent-in-chinese-canadian-communities-its-time-to-address-it.html

2/ Then much of the media jumped on how "crazy Chinese" were also racist, maybe in an effort to alleviate the burden from white nativism. Always rubbed me the wrong way, since no one was asking why certain immigrant groups were being galvanized through this prejudice.
3/ Ultimately, it's not hard to organize some immigrant communities, including the Chinese, by telling them they should fear black/brown refugees or terrorists stalking their neighbourhoods. Which is the language used by some right-wing campaigners last election.
4/4 Meanwhile, no one organizes/engages these immigrants on low wages, inadequate healthcare, childcare, and opportunities.
They're just told: "Conservative values = Chinese values".
The progressive left is just catching up in this regard. #cdnpoli
