Still thinking through this, but:
Launches by companies funded by a few billionaires' fortunes, which were amassed by hyper-exploiting workers in an era of breathtakingly regressive taxation... 1/ https://twitter.com/techwontsaveus/status/1286309305113772034
...makes it nearly impossible to see these otherwise impressive achievements as a step "for all humankind."
To be clear, this isn't negating the awesome dream of space exploration. It's arguing for a dream that we pursue together... 2/
...for a dream that isn't built for a minority by systematically exploiting and depriving the majority. 3/
The idea that human progress in outer space isn't possible without denying people decent wages, working conditions and basic social welfare on Earth is peculiar to a disproportionately empowered sub-population in the US at this historical moment. 4/
I'm willing to bet that most of the brilliant minds doing the research, engineering, and development that make these milestones possible would very much prefer NOT to be doing so in the context of deepening inequality, deprivation, and violence. 5/
I bet many of them resent the characterization of their hard work as part of a white supremacist project. I bet that's abhorrent. I bet many of them have had to overcome their own obstacles. So this is also an opportunity to address the problem rather than reject the premise. 6/
The straightforward course of action here is to take steps to reverse the deepening inequality, deprivation, and violence wherever you can. Even, or especially, if you see yourself as part of a transcendent mission to advance human engagement with outer space. /n
