Fantastic nuanced conversation on meat and Covid-19 from @gastrognome. As @leahjdouglas, Dr. Lindsey Lunford and others say here: the crisis is real, but it didn't start with the pandemic. https://www.thekitchn.com/how-experts-eat-meat-covid19-23061638
None of these issues are new. But like practically everything else in our society right now, a pandemic has revealed the paucity of our systems. They are not built for human flourishing.
"The system that brought you basement bargain prices on meat shattered under COVID-19. The system that has endangered the lives of thousands of workers is why you can get $3.99/lb pork chops." - Kristina Glinoga
But maybe the thing I appreciate most in this piece is Dr. Lindsey Lunsford's thoughtful, nuanced comments on privilege and meat: Even making a choice to skip meat right now s a privilege.
"So, when we ask questions like, 'Is it ethical to eat meat?' we need to think, 'Is it a privilege to be able to change your diet based upon your moral concerns?'" - Dr. Lunsford
"It’s much deeper than just taking a unilateral stance against something. You might say, 'I’m not going to eat meat,' but what about those Black women that depend on that meatpacking job?" - Dr. Lindsey Lunsford https://www.thekitchn.com/how-experts-eat-meat-covid19-23061638
it's a trap to believe that personal behavior is the ultimate change-maker: this human and food system crisis is a failure of policy and a systemic choices, and single choices not to eat meat are not enough.
"Just telling someone not to eat meat is not going to help them know what they need to nourish their body." - Dr. Lunsford. Anyway, read the piece - so many good and thoughtful things to consider.
