An “advanced” political economy can not tolerate a malignant/incompetent major party like this. It doesn’t govern. Just runs on upward redistribution/loosening controls on capital, rigging election and voting administration, and fueling racial/urban/cultural resentment. 1/2 https://twitter.com/brianschatz/status/1286312774361067521
One can imagine a functioning political culture of parties/factions featuring from center to left : 1) Social dem Democrats, eg, Sanders/AOC/Warren vying for Party influence with liberal centrists, eg, congressional leadership. Leftist movements/intellectuals would push party to
left. Liberal centrist institutions (Times/Brookings/foundations generally) would “agree” but do what they do to slow things down—left vs center would fight. On the center-right, problem is: there’s no *national* base-either activists or rank and file—for functional governance.
The “Is this fascism debate?” going back to Trump’s election between liberal centrists (mostly yes) academic leftists ( mostly no) is kind of besides the point. The real problem is that we have a huge multi-racial and multi-cultural democracy with the least state capacity 4/4
and the weakest restrains in Capital—via regulations/unions/cultural expectations, norms in the “advanced” nations world. And 30% of the electorate and a larger % of the dominant, anxious majority ethnic group can, via our failed Madisonian experiment, impede change. /fin
