I woke up this morning thinking about the women's hockey thing where rival Team Canada and Team USA captains keep falling in love, and you could do a whole romance novel series combining that with various tropes.
Enemies to lovers: They know this keeps happening, but it's not going to happen to them. They don't even like each other!
Fake dating: Everyone expects it, and if they just pretend, they can avoid all the matchmaking. But it's just pretend, right?
Sexuality crisis 1: She's never going to fall in love with her rival captain because she's straight. Isn't she?
Sexuality crisis 2: She knows what she likes. She likes dainty girly girls. So why can't she stop thinking about her rival captain?
Sexuality crisis 3: She's known since she was a little girl that she's a lesbian. She thought she was safe from her supposed fate because her rival captain turned regular season teammate is a trans man. So why is she starting to fall in love?
Kink discovery: She's bi, but she's given up on dating men because they always want to be in control. So why does she like it so much when her rival captain tells her what to do?
Threesome: It would be so easy to fall in love with her rival captain. There's just one problem: her rival is already married. But now she might be falling in love with both of them. (You could get double duty out of this one with f/f/f and f/f/m versions.)
Asexual relationship negotiation: She likes her rival. She's caring and fun and great at hockey. Every touch makes her feel so warm. There's just one problem: she's not interested in sex, and that's always been a dealbreaker in relationships. It will be in this one too, won't it?
Accidental baby acquisition: When her brother dies, she's the only one left to take care of her infant niece. She's never gotten along with her rival captain, except it turns out her rival has an amazing ability to calm the baby.
They were roommates: They know what people say about rival captains, but it's not going to happen to them. They're just roommates because it's convenient. There's nothing else there. Is there?
Marriage of convenience: She's tired of scraping by. The only way to get access to her trust fund is to get married. She's learned that people who claim to love her only betray her in the end. But this is just business. Isn't it?
Exes: Breaking up broke both their hearts, and being on rival teams means they don't have to see each other often. But now they're on the same team, and there aren't going to be any broken hearts this time because it's just sex.
Age difference: She's getting older, and this is going to be her last year as captain. She's never fallen in love with any of her previous rivals, and she's not going to fall in love with this one either, who is so very young. Way too young for her. Right?
