Allegedly, the British KFOR contingent was asked to accompany these men and protect them against ethnic-based harassment which was particularly harsh in 1999 against Serbs, Roma and Goranis (and politically non-compliant Albanians) and they refused.
Ethnic-based harassment against non-Albanians persist to this day (with a particularly bloody flare up in 2004), and is aimed at discouraging return of non-Albanian refugees. There are regular incidents of attacks, thefts and destruction of cultural property...
It is persistent unwillingness of the current Kosovo authorities (in power for over 20 years now!) to stop this that makes people in Serbia uneasy about the possibility of a multi-ethnic independent Kosovo, much more than any myth, narrative or propaganda.
This is why it is very jarring to read essays about interethnic relations which seem to neglect these facts and that try to white-wash specific ethno-nationalisms as peaceful and good despite copious evidence to the contrary...
