As a centrist, it took me some time to understand that Critical Social Justice activists (or SJWs) are operating from an ideological starting point that is vastly different from (and antagonistic toward) the traditional social contract built on...
...liberal qualities that most people were raised to uphold. Equality, Tolerance, Charity, Free-speech, Due Process, Hard Work, Personal Responsibility, Logic, Amity, and so many others; all are rejected by Critical Social Justice adherents.

They follow the rules of Critical Social Justice because they want their "interest group" to win. Critical Social Justice not only gives them a way to outmanoeuvre unsuspecting liberal-minded opponents (aka everyone else), it justifies the slimy means they WILL use to win.
It starts from a de facto position that the status quo is evil; anyone supporting it is therefore evil. This lets them lie to anyone to get their way. It also allows them to escape personal responsibility or guilt for the hate they spew...they are, after all, the good guys.
Because achieving Critical Social Justice ends are the only acceptable result, straying from the cause is not tolerated and harshly punished. As a result, the zeal of an SJW for their cause often resembles, to outsiders, the insane devotion of a cult-member.
Arguing with them, or giving in, won't work; it only makes them redouble their attack.
So, how can someone fight against such mindless hate?
The only way to combat their ideology is to reject their fundamental argument because it is based on a lie.

That lie being: traditional liberal social values are inherently discriminatory at a societal level.
Reject their overarching conspiracy and insist traditional liberal values, like equality, personal responsibility, facts, due process, tolerance, DO exist and must be followed.

But, when entering a discussion, how will you know whether you're talking to a regular person or a Critical Social Justice activist?
Normal people won't call you horrible names if you disagree.
