Developing a national-level conservation planning system to inform UK land-use policy and practice

Conservation in the UK is changing, with a focus on Nature Recovery Networks, #NetGain and Environment Land Management schemes replacing CAP payments.

These new approaches are outlined in the @DefraGovUK 25 Year Plan. But the recommended actions are a wish list & ignore the trade-offs involved. To make informed decisions about what to do and where, we should adopt systematic conservation planning.

To start we should identify our priority species, habitats and ecosystem services and set targets for conserving them, as illustrated in this video (with illustrations by @JacobWBentley).

Producing and mapping this list of conservation features + setting national and regional targets will take some effort, and the results should be re-visited and updated every few years. But it would create a unified system to underpin UK conservation.

This should inform #NatureRecoveryNetwork, #ELM & #NetGain planning. It should guide work on mapping UK biodiversity, replacing current ad hoc approaches. And it would let us measure how well our existing protected areas meet conservation targets.
