Government has announced new rules on evictions ahead of lifting the eviction ban on Aug 24.

But they won’t protect the 600,000 people in rent debt due to Covid, we’re heading for an evictions crisis & @RobertJenrick has been telling barefaced lies

THREAD 1/

The way the new rules have been released is very strange. No press release. No fanfare. It’s almost like they’re hiding something…

But @DHCLG officials wrote to us and others with details of the new rules: https://bit.ly/30wGL6u . And they are an absolute joke.

Landlords seeking a possession order from a court after Aug 24 will now have to provide info how their tenant has been impacted by Covid and any rent debt their tenant is in.

BUT there is no way for judges to use that info to decide that the tenant shouldn’t be evicted. 3/
That’s right. It doesn’t matter if a landlord tells the court that their tenant has lost their job due to the pandemic, has been shielding or has Covid.

Judges will be legally bound to authorise an eviction so long as the landlord fills in the paperwork correctly.

4/
Eviction is the leading cause of homelessness. People of colour are among those most at risk.

The government’s recklessness will cause enormous human suffering.

An eviction notice means months of anguish. We can’t stay healthy if we haven’t got a home.

5/
Yesterday morning @RobertJenrick was claiming that the new rules would allow judges to “take due consideration” of how a tenant has been impacted by Covid and was claiming the government would protect renters from eviction:

6/
By the afternoon junior minister @ChrisPincher was admitting that in fact the opposite was true.

Because the government has refused to amend the law, judges will have to approve evictions so long as the landlord fills out the form properly.

7/
Why make landlords provide info about the impact of Covid on their tenants but not give judges the power to take that info into consideration?

Why publish something so ineffective and then lie about it?

The government wants renters and workers to pay for the crisis.

8/
They’ve already cut stamp duty for landlords. Now they’re propping up landlord profits further by giving them a green light to evict tenants who are in arrears due to Covid.

They hope that kick starting the housing market can help hide the deep inequalities in the economy.

9/
Everyone from renter unions to @CommonsHCLG, @crisis_uk, @SadiqKhan, @StepChange are: the government should amend Section 8 of the Housing Act and scrap Section 21 so no one loses their home due to Covid.

We’ll keep fighting until we get what we need to be safe.
