Fair critism & frustrating. Chelsea/United drew historically on ESPN+. Soccer programming is responsible for most of the best numbers on the network this month. Sadly dont think lack of coverage changes unless espn scores a massive CL-type rights agreement which forces the issue https://twitter.com/nickverlaney/status/1286173175546556421
established talents & executives outside of World Cups have never had to pay attention to soccer. don’t ever envision First Take’s producer asking Stephen A & Max to debate playing out the back. Feels like people capable of talking soccer are pigeonholed into doing just that too
I obviously have my very public bias... but we just had an American that stuck out as the most dynamic soccer player on a pitch that had Mo Salah & Sadio Mane on it. That run & assist should be an inescapable highlight during a time there aren’t many highlights.
But ESPN has MLB, CFB, NBA & NFL rights and those are absolute juggernauts for the network, so of course you curate your programming to ultimately drive people to watch the live sporting events you have rights to. It’s the only play in the eyes of decisionmakers. Slow burn for
