I don’t know how to explain what it feels like to be working in #childcare with children as I read the articles tweets and comments about public school reopening. I have 2children- 9 &12 too. I know how underfunded & overcrowded public schools are.
I agree that reopening plans in Philly don’t support families or children and that it may not be safe to return. At the same time I am going to work every day with other #ece educators & with children. It’s scary to read the “we aren’t returning to die” tweets
It’s hard to reconcile this. #childcare professionals are working, wearing PPE, cleaning a lot. We have a #covid handbook based on CDC guidance for childcare. We get new recommendations regularly and update it. To be honest many new tasks=things not in our job descriptions
If we didn’t reopen we’d close forever and all be unemployed. If we open we do so w/many new tasks (temp taking, PPE, teaching kids to wear masks, cleaning a lot). & w/ risks & w/ decreased enrollment. We’re loosing $, relying on savings or loans as a sector now.
I say all this because if we look at how we are responding to #ECE versuses public school reopening as a society we see how much we’ve built a culture that disregards the work of #childcare professionals. If you are upset about schools reopening, check in on your local childcare
Also we need to #fundchildcare now and build a system that supports the work of #ECE professionals so the sector is sustainable long term
