Trans history of the day: the first trans superhero in comics, Coagula aka Kate Godwin (created by Rachel Pollack), was named after both Kate Bornstein and Chelsea Goodwin - goth co-founder of the legendary trans collective house Transy House, where Sylvia Rivera once lived:
Transy House was a collective house created in the image of Sylvia's STAR House. When Sylvia was rediscovered living on the piers in the '90s, activists helped her secure housing with Transy House. It ran from 1995-2008. Here's more on Transy's history: https://www.nyclgbtsites.org/site/transy-house/
In a recent interview, Rachel Pollack (legendary tarot master, comics writer, and early trans activist) said she came up with Coagula when she mentioned to Chelsea Goodwin that she was going to start writing for Doom Patrol and Chelsea was like "Make me into a superhero!"
Transy House became Sylvia Rivera's most stable, longterm housing - she lived there until her death in 2002 alongside a rotating roster of various trans people, as many as 13 at a time.
For those who might be wondering, in the 80s and 90s, 'transy' was an affectionate term some trans women used for each other as a way to bypass the negative and sexual connotations in the word 'tranny.'
